Yavatmal is a trading city in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, located between the Penganga and Wardha rivers. The city sits on plateaus and hills, functioning as a center for cotton processing and commerce in the region.
The city held importance under the Bahmani Sultanate before coming under Mughal control. Later it became part of the British Berar Province and gradually developed into a significant trading hub.
The name comes from the goddess Yavai in local folklore, and residents speak Marathi with the Varhadi dialect. Daily life revolves around cotton markets and commerce, where farmers and traders meet to conduct their business throughout the seasons.
