Madhav National Park, National park in Shivpuri district, India
Madhav National Park is a protected area in Madhya Pradesh that spreads across deciduous forests, open grasslands, and several lakes. The trails wind through the Vindhya plateau and connect different habitats.
The area became officially protected in 1959 and carried a different name at first. The renaming followed later to honor the Maharaja of Gwalior, who once managed these lands.
The name honors Madho Rao Scindia and recalls the time when this area served as royal hunting grounds. George Castle still displays Belgian glass windows and Italian floors from the early 20th century.
The best months for a visit fall between October and March, when the weather remains pleasant and wildlife appears more often. Guided tours on marked paths help explore the different zones safely.
The Sakhya Sagar reservoir was recognized as an internationally important wetland only a few years ago. Migratory birds now use it as an important resting place on their long routes.
