Mahalingeswarar Temple, Thiruvidaimarudur, Hindu temple in Thiruvidaimarudur, India

Mahalingeswarar Temple in Thiruvidaimarudur is a Hindu temple in Tamil Nadu that contains five separate shrines dedicated to Shiva, arranged at the cardinal directions around a central sanctum. The rectangular complex includes paved courtyards and covered corridors that link the different shrines, providing space for pilgrims and ceremonies.

The temple was erected more than twelve centuries ago and gained recognition during Chola rule through three Tamil poets who composed hymns in its honor. The five shrines reflect a theological concept that was widespread in the region during that era.

The temple takes its name from the great linga housed in the central shrine, representing the god in his formless aspect. Worshippers gather here to perform rituals that include singing ancient Tamil hymns in a particular melodic mode traditionally linked to rain and fertility.

The complex sits roughly nine kilometers from Kumbakonam along the Cauvery River and is accessible by public bus. Visitors can walk through the courtyards and explore the different shrines, keeping in mind local customs and conduct.

Inside the temple complex stands a rare shrine to the goddess Mookambika, one of only two in all of India. The other shrine of this kind is located in Kollur in the state of Karnataka, hundreds of kilometers away.
