Tiruvidaimarudur Conservation Reserve

Tiruvidaimarudur Conservation Reserve is a protected area within a Siva temple compound in Tamil Nadu. The site provides nesting grounds for many bird species across a small area with old trees and near agricultural fields.

The area was designated in 2005 as the first Conservation Reserve of its kind in India under new wildlife protection legislation. This establishment marked a turning point in how bird sanctuaries were organized in the country.

The place is named after a local temple and demonstrates how bird protection has become part of the community's daily life. Local residents watch over the nesting areas and ensure the birds can breed safely.

The area is small and sits near the Thamirabarani River amid fields and village areas. Visitors should come early in the morning to see birds at their most active, and wear good footwear since the ground can be muddy.

Old trees over 100 years old grow throughout the area, including maruthu, mahwa, neem, and illuppai species, which provide natural nesting places. These established old trees set this sanctuary apart from other similar sites.
