Sunabeda Tiger Reserve, Wildlife reserve in Nuapada District, Odisha, India.
Sunabeda Tiger Reserve is a wildlife reserve in Nuapada District, Odisha, in central-eastern India, covering plateaus, valleys, and gorges. It protects dense forests and river catchment areas that provide habitat for tigers, swamp deer, and water buffalo.
The area was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1988 to protect species such as swamp deer and water buffalo, whose numbers had fallen sharply. It was later designated a tiger reserve, giving conservation efforts in the region a stronger legal foundation.
Local people living near the reserve participate in conservation efforts that protect the forest and its wildlife. Their involvement shows how communities and nature coexist in this region.
November to March is the best time to visit, as cooler and drier conditions make wildlife easier to spot and the vegetation is less dense. The nearest airport is in Raipur, from where the reserve can be reached by road.
The reserve shelters over 200 bird species, including the Forest Owlet, a rare owl that is almost impossible to see in most other parts of India. Birdwatchers travel specifically to this area to catch a glimpse of it in its natural setting.
