Phurlijharan, Perennial waterfall in Bhawanipatna, India
Phurlijharan is a waterfall near Bhawanipatna, in the state of Odisha, that flows throughout the year and drops into a natural pool at its base. The water then drains into the Sagada River, which runs through the surrounding terrain.
The waterfall was shaped by the slow geological shifts that formed the Eastern Ghats over a very long period. Communities in the area have known and used this water source across many generations.
People from nearby villages come here to wash clothes and collect water, giving the place a relaxed, everyday feel. Visitors often find themselves sharing the space with locals going about their routines.
The site is accessible from State Highway 44, with a walkable path leading down to the water from the road. Bhawanipatna, the nearest town, is a practical base and has regular bus connections to the surrounding area.
When sunlight hits the spray at certain angles, small rainbows form in the mist around the falling water. This happens at different times depending on the season and the time of day, so it is hard to predict but easy to notice when it appears.
