Hanging Bridge at Chekaguda, Rayagada

The Chekaguda bridge spans the Nagavali River with steel cables and connects the city of Rayagada with several rural communities on the other side. It hangs about 30 meters above the water and is used mainly by people on foot to cross between the two banks.

Construction of this structure began in 2011 to replace an old bamboo structure that had been the only crossing point over the river. The project created a direct route where people previously had to take a much longer detour through surrounding areas.

For many people from surrounding villages, this bridge is a daily connection to markets, schools, and workplaces in the city. It has changed how residents from several communities divide their time between rural and urban areas.

Access to the bridge is free and straightforward, so anyone can cross whenever they wish. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and avoid crossing in groups larger than eight people to stay safe.

The bridge has become so well-known locally that schools and officials now use it for teaching about engineering. Many students visit specifically to understand how suspension bridges work.
