Jagannath Temple, Koraput, Hindu temple in Koraput, India.
The Jagannath Temple, Koraput is a Hindu temple built on a hilltop called Sabara Srikshetra in the Koraput district of Odisha. The structure follows the traditional Odia temple style, with carved stone decorations and a setting surrounded by forested hills.
The temple was founded in the 20th century as part of the spread of Jagannath worship from the coastal shrine at Puri into the tribal inland areas of Odisha. This brought communities in the Koraput region closer to a tradition that had until then been practiced mainly far away.
The temple has a strong connection to the Sabara community, a tribal group traditionally seen as the original guardians of the Jagannath tradition. During major festivals, members of this community take active roles in the rituals, giving the site a character different from most Hindu temples.
The temple sits on a hilltop, so visitors should be ready for a short uphill walk to reach the entrance. As with most Hindu temples in India, modest clothing is expected and shoes must be removed before entering.
During the annual Ratha Yatra festival, a tribal chief performs a ritual sweeping of the god's chariot, a custom found in this form only at this site. This direct role of tribal leadership in a core temple ceremony is not seen at other Jagannath temples.
