Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga , Bhimpur, Hindu temple in Bhimpur, India
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, also known as Bhimpur, is a Hindu temple in the western foothills of the Mahendragiri mountains in Odisha, India. It sits within a river valley enclosed by rocky hills and dense forest.
The site was rediscovered in 1974 during archaeological excavations in the mountain terrain, after it had been forgotten for centuries. The finds confirmed that this place already held religious importance in ancient times.
Pilgrims travel here to worship the Shiva Lingam at the center of the shrine, often arriving on foot through the forested hills. The setting along the river valley gives the visit a meditative quality that is felt throughout the site.
The temple is about 19 miles (30 km) from Gunupur, reached by mountain roads that are much easier to travel during the drier months. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, as the terrain around the shrine is uneven.
The temple stands at the exact point where the Mahendratanaya and Vamsadhara rivers meet. A waterfall called Machha Diian flows nearby all year round, making it worth visiting even outside the monsoon season.
