Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga , Bhimpur, Hindu temple in Bhimpur, India
The Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is a Hindu temple located in the western foothills of the Mahendragiri mountains along a river valley in Odisha. The structure features a central shrine with traditional architectural design, surrounded by rocky hills and forested terrain.
The site was rediscovered in 1974 through archaeological excavations in the mountainous terrain after having been lost to time. The excavations revealed the ancient significance of this location in eastern India.
This site holds the status of one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, making it an important destination for pilgrims who come to worship at this revered location. The setting along the river and within the mountains creates a space where visitors can engage in their spiritual practice.
The temple is situated approximately 30 kilometers from Gunupur and can be reached by traveling through mountain roads from that town. The best time to visit is during drier months when the paths are easier to navigate.
This sanctuary stands at the meeting point of two rivers where the Mahendratanaya and Vamsadhara converge. The location is enhanced by the nearby year-round Machha Diian waterfall that adds to the natural surroundings.
