Bhawanipatna

Bhawanipatna is the administrative center of Kalahandi district, located at an elevation of 248 meters in Odisha state. The city is organized across twenty municipal wards that contain numerous residential neighborhoods, each serving different parts of the urban area.

The city's name comes from combining the Bhabani-Sankar deity with 'Patana', an Odia word meaning place, reflecting its religious foundations. This naming reflects how spiritual significance influenced the establishment and identity of the city.

Multiple language communities coexist within the city, with residents speaking Odia dialects alongside Kui, Bhatri, Parji, and Bhunjia. This linguistic diversity shapes how neighborhoods interact and celebrate their distinct traditions together.

The city has access to the District Headquarters Hospital and Maa Manikeswari Multispeciality Hospital, along with several nursing homes scattered throughout. These health facilities are well distributed across the city, making them accessible for visitors and residents alike.

A Doordarshan broadcasting station established in 1987 is one of only three such facilities in Odisha state, producing regional news programming. This broadcast center brings local stories and information to communities across the wider region.
