Vamsadhara River, River in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, India
Vamsadhara River flows approximately 254 kilometers from the Eastern Ghats through northeastern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha before emptying into the Bay of Bengal at Kalingapatnam. The waterway passes through hilly terrain with lush vegetation and creates rapids and deeper pools along its course.
Ancient dynasties depended on this waterway for agriculture, establishing settlements and trade networks along its banks over many centuries. Water management shaped the region and allowed communities to grow and thrive in areas fed by its flows.
The river's name combines 'bansa' meaning bamboo and 'dhara' meaning water flow, reflecting the dense bamboo forests that grow near its source in the Eastern Ghats.
The river is managed through two major barrages that distribute water between the two neighboring states. Visiting is possible throughout the year, though the monsoon season brings powerful flows while dry months reveal calmer waters.
An unusual arrangement exists where all storage reservoirs are situated in Odisha while most irrigated farmland is located in Andhra Pradesh. This setup reflects the complex water-sharing agreement between the two states.
