Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary

Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected reserve near the Eastern Ghats mountains with dry evergreen forests, scrub areas, and grasslands spread across steep terrain. The landscape includes various elevations and vegetation types that support the local animal and plant life.

The territory was governed by the Maharajah of Vizianagaram until 1970, when the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department took over its management and protection. This transition established the area as a formal wildlife reserve under government oversight.

The sanctuary takes its name from a local hilltop called Kambalakonda, a place name that connects the landscape to the traditions and language of the region.

The best time to visit is after the rainy season when weather is mild and paths are most accessible. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as the hilly terrain requires steady walking and good preparation.

The sanctuary is home to Indian leopards, pythons, and the colorful paradise flycatcher, birds that visitors may spot on walks through the reserve. Additionally, it harbors more than 70 species of medicinal plants valued in traditional Indian medicine.
