Visakhapatnam Central Jail

The Visakhapatnam Central Prison operates as a major detention center serving the North Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, and Vizianagaram.

Established in 2001, this prison replaced an older facility from 1908 that was located near the current Bus Station and has since been transformed into a Central Park.

The facility houses a large number of inmates from tribal communities of the ASR district, reflecting the regional demographic composition of the prison population.

Located 14 kilometers from Visakhapatnam city center, the prison provides accommodation for various categories of inmates, including those under simple imprisonment, rigorous imprisonment, and awaiting trial.

Despite its official capacity of 914 inmates, the facility currently houses 1900 prisoners, with approximately 1500 individuals detained under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
