Tomb of Aurangzeb, Mughal tomb in Khuldabad, India
The emperor's tomb is a modest site in Khuldabad with a marble grave marker inscribed with Quranic verses and surrounded by a marble screen. This protective enclosure was installed in 1911 by Lord Curzon.
The emperor ruled India for roughly five decades until his death in 1707, which marked a turning point for Mughal power. He chose this location to be buried near his spiritual teacher Sheikh Zainuddin.
The tomb displays Islamic design elements and stands apart from the elaborate structures built by other Mughal rulers. Its simple appearance reflects the emperor's religious convictions.
The site is located about 24 kilometers from Aurangabad city and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India with regular supervision. Plan your visit during daylight hours for safe access to the grounds.
The emperor financed the construction through his own savings from handicraft work during his final years. The modest total cost of 14 rupees and 12 annas reflects his deliberate choice for humility over grandeur.
