Grishneshwar temple, Hindu temple in Verul village, Sambhajinagar district, India
Grishneshwar is a Hindu temple in the village of Verul in India, located near the famous Ellora Caves. The complex features carved pillars and figures in dark stone, shaped in South Indian style and forming a tall tower above the inner shrine.
A queen from the 18th century had the shrine rebuilt after repeated destruction during conflicts between different rulers. The current structure follows the form of South Indian shrines and replaced earlier versions.
The name comes from a traditional story about a devoted woman named Kusuma who worshiped Lord Shiva, and the shrine honors Grishna. Pilgrims walk clockwise around the shrine and touch the walls to show their reverence.
The shrine opens daily and allows visitors access to the inner area, where modest clothing is expected. The entrance sits close to the Ellora Caves, so both places can be visited easily in one day.
Male visitors must remove their upper garment before entering the inner chamber, which is an old ritual requirement. The shrine is considered one of twelve special Shiva shrines across India.
