Daulatabad Fort, Medieval fort in Sambhajinagar district, India
Daulatabad Fort is a medieval stronghold in the Sambhajinagar district of India, sitting on a steep basalt hill. The complex shows several defensive rings with bastions, a deep moat, and a winding tunnel that leads to the summit.
King Bhillama V of the Yadava dynasty founded the stronghold in 1187 and originally named it Deogiri. Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq moved the capital of his empire here in the 14th century and forced the population of Delhi to relocate.
The name means
The climb to the top takes about an hour and requires passing through several steep staircases and a dark tunnel. Sturdy footwear and a flashlight or phone light make the visit much easier.
A large cannon called Mendha still lies within the grounds and testifies to the military importance of the site. The artificial caves in the lower section once served as storage rooms and quarters for soldiers.
