Karaikal Kailasanathar Temple

Karaikal Kailasanathar Temple is a large sanctuary with four grand gateways oriented toward the cardinal directions. The complex contains multiple shrines for different deities and impresses visitors with its expansive layout and architectural craftsmanship.

This religious site originated more than 2000 years ago and was rebuilt during the Pallava dynasty in the 8th century. Later French colonial presence also influenced the structure and appearance of the sanctuary.

This sanctuary honours Shiva and various deities through multiple shrines that visitors can explore throughout the complex. The depictions of 63 venerated saints visible on the walls reveal the deep spiritual connection this place holds within local traditions.
