Mittersill, Mountain municipality in Zell am See District, Austria
Mittersill is a municipality in the Kitzbühel Alps at about 790 meters elevation. It spreads along the Salzach River and combines a historic town center with ski slopes and hiking trails in the surrounding mountains.
People settled here as early as the Bronze Age, and the town received market rights in 1357 that helped it grow into a trading hub. This position allowed it to prosper economically between Tyrol and Italy for centuries.
St. Leonard's Church dominates the townscape with its Gothic design from the 13th century. It shows how deeply rooted religious traditions are in this mountain village and remains the focal point of community life today.
A cable car takes visitors up to the Resterhöhe ski area with slopes for different skill levels and mountain paths in summer. A local train also connects the village easily to nearby towns like Zell am See and Krimml.
The village is home to two notable manufacturing sites: a ski equipment factory and a flag workshop that produce sports gear and handcrafted flags for the world market. This unusual industrial mix shows how traditional craft and modern sports business coexist side by side.
