Loferer Alm, Mountain pasture and ski resort in Lofer, Austria.
Loferer Alm is a mountain pasture at about 1391 meters elevation with ski lifts and alpine huts, used as grazing land for cattle in summer and a winter sports area in winter. The terrain consists mostly of open meadows with scattered mountain huts and connected slopes.
The pasture has been used seasonally by farmers for centuries, driving cattle to the mountain in summer and bringing them back to the valley in autumn. This alpine farming practice remains the foundation of how the area functions today.
Shepherds and farmers shape daily life on the pasture through their work with herds, most visible during summer grazing season when cattle roam the mountain meadows.
The area is accessible from Lofer via a cable car that brings most visitors directly up to the pasture. Good footwear is important since paths across the meadows can be muddy at times, especially after rain.
The site has several learning stations that teach visitors about alpine ecosystems and mountain farming as they explore the landscape. These stations make the pasture more than just a sports area and show how nature and human use are closely connected here.
