Dachstein glacier, Glacier complex in Ramsau am Dachstein, Austria.
The Dachstein glacier is a glacier complex in the Austrian Alps, in Upper Austria, sitting at around 8,800 feet (2,700 meters) above sea level. It includes several visitor attractions such as an Ice Palace, a suspension bridge, and the Sky Walk viewing platform, all connected by mountain paths.
The Dachstein glacier became accessible to visitors after a cable car was installed in 1969. In the decades that followed, new facilities were added step by step, making the site easier to explore.
The glacier restaurant sits on the border between Styria and Upper Austria, serving regional dishes with Alpine views all around. People gather here to share meals and conversations while enjoying the mountain landscape in every direction.
The glacier is reached by cable car, which runs directly to the mountain station. Allow several hours for the visit, since the paths between the different spots are long and the altitude slows you down.
The mountain station covers a large part of its energy needs through a photovoltaic glass facade built directly into the building. This approach shows that renewable energy can work even at very high elevations.
