Schladminger Gletscher, Alpine glacier in Obertraun, Austria.
Schladminger Gletscher is an ice field covering much of the upper Dachstein plateau, surrounded by high rocky peaks and steep slopes. The glacier surface displays typical features like crevasses and compacted snow formations visible throughout the year.
The glacier formed after the last ice age and once extended over a much larger area than it covers today. In recent centuries, its margins have shifted significantly as a result of temperature fluctuations and climate patterns.
The Dachstein area received recognition as a protected nature reserve in 1963 and later gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1998.
Visitors can reach the glacier area using modern cable cars and mountain lifts that operate year-round. The best time for safe exploration is from May through September, when weather conditions are more favorable.
Archaeologists discovered remains of a late Bronze Age settlement in this region, revealing that people inhabited the area thousands of years ago. The findings provide insight into how early communities thrived at high elevations.
