Obertraun

Obertraun is a municipality nestled at the base of Dachstein mountain, stretching along Hallstätter See lake. The valley is framed by high mountains on both sides, creating a dramatic setting for the settlement.

The settlement began as a community of woodcutters and farmers who worked the surrounding land. It became an independent municipality in 1921 after separating from Hallstatt's administration.

The community observes Alpine traditions through seasonal gatherings where locals celebrate mountain life and heritage. These events shape how residents relate to each other and to the landscape around them throughout the year.

The cable car system reaches into the Dachstein area, providing access to mountain caves, hiking trails, and skiing terrain depending on the season. Good infrastructure connects different routes and makes activities accessible for various skill levels and interests.

The Freesports Arena Krippenstein contains more than 30 kilometers of unmarked ski runs and multiple snowshoe trails across natural mountain terrain. This area offers a more immersive winter experience for experienced winter sports enthusiasts.
