Monastery of the Saint Parascheva of the Balkans in Bijeljina, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Monastery of Saint Parascheva of the Balkans is a Serbian Orthodox monastery at the northeastern edge of Bijeljina, in the flat lowland of the Semberija region. The complex consists of several stone buildings arranged around open grounds, with a number of small lakes spread across the property.
The monastery was founded in the 20th century under the Eparchy of Zvornik and Tuzla. It was built as a renewed expression of Serbian Orthodox religious life in the Semberija area, a region with deep roots in that tradition.
The monastery is dedicated to Saint Parascheva, one of the most venerated saints in the Serbian Orthodox world. On her feast day, pilgrims travel from across the region to attend services on the grounds.
The monastery is best visited during daylight hours and can be reached by following the main roads toward the northeastern edge of Bijeljina. As in most Orthodox monasteries, modest clothing is expected when entering the church or meeting the monks.
The Serbian name of the monastery includes the word for lakes, a direct reference to the ponds that dot the grounds and set it apart from most other Orthodox monasteries in the country. These stretches of water give the property an open, natural character that visitors notice as soon as they arrive.
