Varna Aquarium, Public aquarium in Sea Garden, Varna, Bulgaria
The Varna Aquarium is a white building located in the Sea Garden of Varna, Bulgaria, where fish and sea creatures from different habitats are displayed in tanks. The collection covers species from the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, and freshwater environments.
The building was commissioned by Prince Ferdinand I in 1906, but the Balkan Wars and World War I pushed the opening back by decades. It finally opened in 1932 under Tsar Boris III.
The aquarium sits inside the Sea Garden, a large coastal park in Varna, and draws many school groups and families on weekends. Children can see Black Sea creatures up close, which for many is their first direct encounter with marine life.
The aquarium is open most days of the year but keeps shorter hours in the colder months, so it is worth checking before visiting. A visit typically takes one to two hours, and the path through the galleries is easy to walk.
Inside the building there is a specialized library holding around 30,000 volumes, including rare marine biology books from the 19th century. This makes the aquarium a destination not just for tourists but also for researchers and book enthusiasts.
