Кози Грамади

Kozi Gramadi is a natural sanctuary in Plovdiv Province featuring varied terrain across multiple marked walking trails. The area combines open grasslands with forested sections and supports diverse plant life and wildlife habitats throughout its landscape.

Archaeological discoveries within the sanctuary reveal traces of Thracian civilization, including ancient tombs and burial mounds dating back centuries. These early inhabitants left behind evidence of their presence and spiritual practices in this mountain setting.

The name comes from a local folk tale about a young goatherd and her flock that vanished during a mountain storm in March. This legend remains woven into how visitors and locals think about this place today.

The sanctuary sits at about 1100 meters elevation and is reached through marked trails connecting the towns of Hisarya and Starosel. Spring through autumn offers the best conditions for walking and exploring, when weather is most stable and paths are easiest to navigate.

The sanctuary preserves both ecological systems and archaeological artifacts simultaneously, making it a rare example of nature conservation and historical protection working together. This dual purpose allows visitors to encounter prehistoric evidence within living natural landscapes.
