Thracian Tomb near Starosel, Archaeological tomb in Starosel, Bulgaria
The Thracian Tomb near Starosel is an underground burial chamber with a long corridor and a decorated volcanic stone facade. The circular inner chamber displays painted walls and architectural details including semi-columns with ornate carved capitals.
The structure was built during the reign of Thracian King Amatokos II in the mid fourth century BC. It was later destroyed, likely during the campaigns of Macedonian King Philip II who conquered the region.
The painted walls inside display blue and red pigments applied by Thracian artisans who understood color and design. These decorations show what mattered to the people who built this place.
Access to the tomb is arranged through guided visits that provide explanations of the construction methods and details. Wear comfortable shoes since the underground passages are narrow and the floors uneven in places.
The tomb contains a rare Doric colonnade, the only one known in Thracian architecture. This unusual feature reflects cultural contact and influence between Greek and Thracian builders.
