Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine Bridge-Tunnel

The Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine Bridge-Tunnel spans across the Saint Lawrence River with a combined structure of elevated roadway and submerged tunnel sections.

Construction of this infrastructure project began in 1963 and reached completion in March 1967, requiring an investment of 75 million dollars.

The structure bears the name of Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine, a political reformer who made substantial contributions to the development of Lower Canada.

The tunnel section extends 1,391 meters beneath the river while the causeway measures 409 meters, accommodating approximately 120,000 vehicles each day.

Engineers created a massive dry dock measuring 2,000 feet by 1,000 feet to construct seven prefabricated tunnel sections weighing 32,000 tons each.
