Dufferin County, county in Ontario, Canada
Dufferin County is an upper-tier municipality in central Ontario comprising eight smaller communities working together as one area. It consists mainly of farmland, forests, and small towns, with Orangeville serving as the largest town and administrative center.
The county was established in 1881 from parts of adjacent counties and named after a serving Canadian governor. Many of its towns grew from small settlements into established communities over the following decades, each developing its own local identity.
The county takes its name from a former Canadian governor, the Marquess of Dufferin and Ava. In the small towns and at local markets and fairs, you notice how farming traditions and community gatherings remain central to daily life, with families coming together to share homemade foods and celebrate local ways.
The county is best explored by car, with main roads connecting the larger towns, located about 100 kilometers northwest of Toronto. Public buses serve Orangeville, but having a vehicle allows easier access to the various communities and natural areas scattered throughout.
The famous motel set from the television series Schitt's Creek sits on private property in Mono and has become a popular photo spot for fans. Visitors drive past to capture pictures of the building that became an unexpected pop culture landmark.
