St. Mary's Church, Roman Catholic church in Niagara neighborhood, Toronto, Canada
St. Mary's Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Niagara neighborhood featuring a central tower and rose window built in the Gothic Revival style. The building displays a three-aisled basilica layout at Bathurst Street near Portugal Square.
The parish was founded in 1852 by Irish immigrants and the current building was completed in 1889 from designs by architect Joseph Connolly. The distinctive tower was added later in 1905.
The parish reflects the diversity of the neighborhood shaped by Irish, Polish, Ukrainian, and Portuguese immigrants who settled in the area over generations. This heritage remains visible in the surrounding street names and in the makeup of today's congregation.
The building is easily reached by public transit and walking through an active city neighborhood. The interior is open for visitors who wish to explore the architecture and the worship space.
In 2012 workers discovered remains beneath the church of cholera victims from the 1800s, a sobering reminder of the neighborhood's past. This historical finding is being honored by the congregation through planned memorials.
