Whitefish Bay, Lake inlet at Michigan-Ontario border, United States and Canada
Whitefish Bay is a large inlet along Lake Superior that stretches across the border between Michigan and Ontario. The water is marked by three lighthouses that guide ships safely through navigation.
The opening of the Soo Locks in 1855 brought increased ship traffic through this inlet. Rising traffic also brought more frequent shipwrecks due to hazardous navigation conditions.
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point displays vessels that were lost in Lake Superior waters, telling the stories of those aboard. Visitors can explore maritime history through exhibits and accounts of past events.
The inlet is surrounded by lighthouses that help with navigation in any weather, especially during poor visibility. Visitors should know that the waters remain cold and weather can change rapidly.
Beneath the surface of this inlet lies the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve containing multiple shipwrecks, including the famous steamer SS Edmund Fitzgerald. These sunken vessels tell of one of the Great Lakes' most treacherous waters.
