Rideau Cottage, Official residence in Ottawa, Canada
Rideau Cottage is a two-storey brick residence in Georgian Revival style at 1 Sussex Drive in central Ottawa. The building features a hipped roof with paired chimneys and symmetrically arranged sash windows on both floors.
Frederick Preston Rubidge designed the residence in 1866 as housing for the Secretary to the Governor General of Canada. The property was later converted to an official guesthouse for dignitaries and has served multiple administrative purposes since the 20th century.
The 22-room building represents federal architectural heritage through its symmetrical composition, sash windows, and decorative elements.
The residence sits within short walking distance of Rideau Hall and can be reached via footpaths through the grounds. Visitors can view the exterior facade from the sidewalk, though the interior is typically closed to the public.
The property contains 22 rooms and has served as temporary housing for the Prime Minister since 2015. This arrangement broke with the long tradition of the head of government residing at 24 Sussex Drive.
