Giornico, Village in the Leventina valley, Ticino, Switzerland

Giornico is a small village in the Leventina valley of Ticino, Switzerland, where the Ticino River runs between rocky cliffs and a wide debris slope to the north. The village sits at the point where the flat lowlands of Ticino give way to the higher Alpine terrain.

The first written records of Giornico date from the early 900s, during the Carolingian period, and the name may come from a Celtic word for wooded mountain. For centuries, the village controlled the main route over the St. Gotthard pass, which is why the historian Stefano Franscini called it the gateway to Leventina.

The village is easy to reach by road or train along the Leventina valley, and most of its historic sites are within walking distance of each other. A simple loop on foot takes you past the old stone bridges, the churches, and the ruins on the hill above the village.

Giornico has two medieval stone bridges that still cross the Ticino River today, and they are among the few remaining examples of their kind in the region. The Torre di Atto, a tower standing in the village, is tied to the moment when the feudal rights of the surrounding area were handed to the Canons of Milan Cathedral.
