Santa Maria del Castello Church, Romanesque church on hilltop in Giornico, Switzerland.

Santa Maria del Castello is a Romanesque church that stands on a hilltop in Giornico and features two parallel naves, a rectangular choir, and a bell tower positioned next to a round apse. The building combines these elements in a way that reflects the northern Italian architecture of that time.

The church was built between 1121 and 1208 and served as the region's cathedral for a long time. In 1435 it lost this status when the cathedral function moved to the Church of Santa Margherita.

The interior walls display frescoes from the 15th century showing religious scenes like Christ with the four Evangelists and scenes of Saint George. These artworks shape how the space feels when you walk inside.

The building is not constantly open, but you can get keys from the nearby Osteria Giornico to visit it. Plan your visit in advance since access depends on the opening hours of the Osteria.

The building contains an octagonal immersion baptismal font that blends elements from three different architectural traditions: transalpine, Lombard, and Arab designs. This uncommon font reveals the cultural connections that shaped the Mediterranean region during the Middle Ages.
