Lago del Sambuco, reservoir above Fusio, in the municipality of Lavizzara, Ticino, Switzerland
Lago del Sambuco is a mountain reservoir in Ticino that stretches for several kilometers between rocky slopes and forests. The lake was created by a dam built across the Maggia River and sits at high elevation surrounded by steep terrain.
The dam was completed in 1956 as part of a hydroelectric project to supply energy to local communities. Over decades, this infrastructure has become integrated into the mountain landscape while continuing to provide water and power to the region.
Visitors can drive up a steep mountain road with numerous hairpin turns or hike from Fusio, taking several hours to reach the lake. Arriving early helps secure parking, as spaces are limited in this remote mountain location.
On clear days, visitors can spot marmots and many bird species, while shepherds occasionally guide flocks across the mountain pastures near the lake. Local cheesemakers in the area produce fresh dairy products that hikers often purchase directly during their visits.
