Lago del Narèt

Lago del Narèt is a reservoir built in 1970 at an elevation over 2300 meters (7,546 feet) in the mountains of Ticino. The lake holds water for hydroelectric power generation and is surrounded by rocky slopes, smaller mountain lakes, and alpine terrain where hikers can explore marked trails.

The reservoir was constructed in 1970 to store water for regional power generation through hydroelectric infrastructure. This development transformed how the high-altitude valley was used, eventually opening it to hikers who now explore the alpine terrain and surrounding peaks.

The easiest access is by car from Locarno through Fusio to the parking area near the reservoir, though the narrow mountain road is best suited for smaller vehicles. Prepare for changing weather with layered clothing, sturdy shoes, water, and snacks, as the high elevation can be cold even in summer months.

The area is home to chamois and ibex that visitors may spot, especially during early mornings or late evenings when these animals are most active. Photographers favor this location for its clear water and changing light conditions that create striking images of the alpine landscape.
