Turtmannhütte, Mountain hut in Turtmann-Unterems, Switzerland
The Turtmannhütte sits on a rocky ridge and accommodates about 74 guests in simple rooms with Nordic down bedding. From this location you can see the Brunegg and Turtmann glaciers as well as the peaks of Diablon and Bishorn.
The structure was built in 1928 as a simple shelter for climbers on the mountain. A major expansion happened in 2000 to create more sleeping spaces and improve basic facilities.
The hut serves regional specialties and homemade baked goods prepared by the keepers using vegetables grown on the property. You can taste local Alpine cooking traditions in a simple, welcoming setting.
The refuge is open during summer from June through September and in winter from March through May. Getting there involves hiking on mountain trails that require moderate Alpine experience and fitness.
The surrounding area is a well-known climbing zone with more than 160 routes at different difficulty levels. A mountain guide based here also leads glacier tours so visitors can explore the ice fields nearby.
