Weisshorn, Mountain peak in Pennine Alps, Switzerland

The Weisshorn is a mountain peak in the Pennine Alps situated between the Anniviers and Zermatt valleys. It features three steep ridges descending from the summit, creating a distinctive pyramidal form.

The first ascent occurred in 1861 when physicist John Tyndall reached the summit with local mountain guides from the Randa valley. This achievement marked an important moment in the development of alpine mountaineering.

The mountain is deeply woven into the story of mountaineering in Switzerland and draws climbers seeking to test themselves on technical routes. Local mountain guides have long been central to the experience of attempting this peak.

The Weisshorn Hut is the main base for climbers and provides shelter and meals for those attempting the peak. Expect a demanding technical climb that requires proper training and mountain experience.

Two major rockslides occurred from a cliff face near the Bis Glacier in 1991, revealing the dynamic geological forces at work in this region. These events remind climbers that alpine environments are constantly changing.
