Weisshorn, Mountain peak in Pennine Alps, Switzerland
The Weisshorn rises to 4,506 meters in elevation between the valleys of Anniviers and Zermatt, featuring three steep ridges that descend from its summit point.
Irish physicist John Tyndall completed the first ascent of the Weisshorn on August 19, 1861, accompanied by guides J.J. Bennen and Ulrich Wenger from the town of Randa.
The Weisshorn represents a central element of Swiss mountaineering tradition, drawing climbers who seek to master its technical routes and steep faces throughout the seasons.
The Weisshorn Hut serves as the primary starting point for climbers attempting the normal route, providing necessary shelter and base camp facilities for mountaineering expeditions.
Two substantial rockslides occurred from a cliff near the Bis Glacier in April and May 1991, demonstrating the dynamic geological nature of this alpine environment.
