Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge, Pedestrian suspension bridge on Europaweg trail, Switzerland.
The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian walkway spanning 494 meters across a deep ravine as part of the Europaweg trail. It hangs 85 meters above the ground, with a cable structure designed to safely carry hikers across this dramatic valley section.
Construction finished in July 2017 after a major rockslide destroyed the previous bridge and left the hiking route disconnected. The new structure restored access to this important mountain trail section for walkers.
The bridge plays a central role in the local hiking culture, serving as a key connection point for mountain walkers exploring the Alpine trails. It has become part of how people experience this mountain region through their daily walks and seasonal expeditions.
Visitors can reach the bridge by hiking from Randa village, with parking available near the train station and church area. The crossing takes only a few minutes on foot and sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for safe passage.
The cable system uses roughly 8 tonnes of steel and was engineered to reduce swaying sensations. This design choice allows hikers to walk smoothly across the structure despite the extreme height.
