Dom, Mountain summit in Valais, Switzerland
Dom is a mountain summit in the Valais region of the Pennine Alps, located between Zermatt and Saas Fee at 4,545 meters. The peak displays extensive glacial formations that shape its appearance and define the surrounding landscape.
British climber J.L. Davies made the first successful ascent to the summit in 1858, a significant milestone in Alpine mountaineering. This ascent opened a new chapter for climbers exploring this remote Alpine peak.
The name "Dom" honors Canon Berchtold of Sitten cathedral, who surveyed this Alpine region in its early scientific study. Today climbers who reach the summit feel part of a tradition of mountaineering ambition.
The standard route requires approximately 3,100 meters (10,000 feet) of elevation gain without mechanical assistance. Climbers should arrive well-prepared with Alpine experience and good physical fitness for the technical sections.
This peak stands as the highest mountain located entirely within Swiss borders, making it the third highest in the Alps overall. Few realize that this geographic distinction sets it apart from other major Alpine summits.
