Kirchenruine San Gaudenzio

The San Gaudenzio church ruins stand northeast of Casaccia along the Maloja Pass road with high stone walls and a polygonal choir section. The interior extends approximately 26 meters in length, displaying the Late Gothic style typical of the region.

Construction began in 1514 and the church was consecrated in 1518, replacing an earlier structure first mentioned in 831 as a possession of Pfäfers monastery. Its location on a major trade route made it an important religious center for the region.

The walls display red chalk drawings and inscriptions left by pilgrims during the 16th and 17th centuries. These marks reveal how important this place was for travelers passing through the mountain route.

The site is easily reached from the pass road and the ruins are freely accessible from outside. Wear comfortable shoes and be cautious in poor weather, as the structure is ancient and partially open to the elements.

The ruins underwent preservation work in 1925 and received additional restoration efforts beginning in 2009 to improve stability. This ongoing care has helped maintain the original features of this Gothic structure.
