Le Flon is a shopping and entertainment district in the center of Lausanne, built on a raised platform above the main train station. The buildings are former industrial warehouses from the early 1900s, now converted into shops, restaurants, offices, and cultural venues.
The Flon valley was once a river running through the city, which was covered over in the 19th century to create a freight and storage zone. The area declined over time before a gradual transformation starting in the 1990s turned it into a mixed urban district.
Le Flon is known today as a place where nightlife, shopping, and creative work share the same streets. By day, people browse shops and sit in cafes; by night, the old warehouse spaces fill up with music and crowds.
Le Flon is fully pedestrian and easy to explore on foot, with no car traffic on the main platform. It is served directly by the Lausanne metro at the Flon station, making it simple to reach from other parts of the city.
At the center of the district stands a group of three buildings called Les Pépinières, one of which has a facade engraved with patterns that resemble Arabic calligraphy. This unexpected detail in a former freight zone surprises many visitors who notice it up close.
