Bibliothèque des Cèdres, Theology library in Lausanne, Switzerland
The Bibliothèque des Cèdres, also called the Bibliothèque des Pasteurs, is a theology library in Lausanne, Switzerland. It occupies a pale stone and stucco building with a central entrance bay, a balcony with white openwork railing, and brown-framed windows.
The library was first mentioned in 1849 as part of the theology faculty of the Free Evangelical Church. It moved to the chemin des Cèdres in 1864, and the building later housed the faculty until 1966.
The library grew from the personal collections of pastors, and many volumes reflect their broad interests beyond theology. Today, the building stands as a reminder of the free church's presence in Lausanne, though its doors are temporarily shut.
The library is closed for renovation, so you cannot enter or borrow books at the moment. Check the university library website for updates on the reopening before planning a visit.
The library holds many books that have little to do with theology, collected by pastors who were also well-read men. Among them are rare editions and even anonymous pamphlets from the 18th century.
