Angel fountain

The Angel Fountain stands on the central plaza of the Old Town and is crowned by an angel statue that watches over a stone basin into which water continuously flows. The structure features multiple levels and displays fine details in the carving of the figure and its base.

The fountain was built in 1564 as part of Bienne's city development during the Renaissance period. A major reorganization happened in 1827 when the basin was repositioned and the statue was reoriented to face a neighboring historic building.

The fountain takes its name from the angel statue that crowns it and serves as a meeting point in the heart of the Old Town, where locals and visitors naturally pass through. The water sculpture speaks to the craftsmanship that defined Bienne during the 1500s.

The fountain sits on a public plaza in the center of the Old Town and is easily reached on foot by walking through the medieval streets. The spot is accessible from all sides and provides a natural stopping point while exploring the surrounding streets.

The statue has faced a neighboring building called the Alte Krone since its rotation in 1827 - a subtle architectural connection that many visitors miss. This intentional alignment created a hidden dialogue between two monuments on the plaza.
