Juliertheater, Alpine theater on Julier Pass, Grisons, Switzerland
Juliertheater was a ten-sided wooden structure rising on Julier Pass, able to accommodate up to 220 spectators through arched windows. The slender form with curved glass openings allowed the audience to view the mountains while experiencing a performance.
The theater was conceived in 2016 by festival director Giovanni Netzer and opened its doors on July 31, 2017, with an opera performance. The structure was planned as temporary from the start and was dismantled in autumn 2023.
The theater brought together visitors from different countries who gathered in the alpine setting. Its multi-sided wooden form with multiple window openings created a sense of openness toward the surrounding landscape.
The theater sat 15 kilometers from St. Moritz and 75 kilometers from Chur, making it difficult to reach without additional transport. Performances were supported by shuttle bus connections to help visitors reach the high-altitude location.
The theater's architectural form played with references to the Tower of Babylon, linking ancient building styles with contemporary design. This unusual source of inspiration gave the mountain theater a deeper conceptual meaning.
