Tonghua, prefecture-level city in Jilin, China
Tonghua is a prefecture-level city in Jilin Province in northeastern China, positioned in a river valley along the Yalu River. The downtown core stretches linearly along the water, with forested hills rising on either side of the valley.
The city originated as a trading post during the Japanese occupation in the first half of the 1900s and later developed into an industrial center. Its post-war growth contributed significantly to China's heavy industry development.
The name reflects the valley location that defines the city's geography and local identity. Today the place shows its mixed character through older industrial-era buildings standing alongside newer urban development.
The city has good road access and the downtown remains relatively compact and walkable on foot. The best time to visit is from May to October when the weather is mild and surrounding hillsides are green.
The city sits near the border with North Korea, a location that shaped its historical role as a crossroads between different regions. This geographic position continues to define its significance in the region today.
