Songlanshan is a seaside resort in the southeastern part of Xiangshan County, featuring an extensive coastline with several sandy beaches and sea-sculpted landforms. The area is formed by a long mountain range that extends into the ocean, creating small islands, rocky outcrops, caves, and natural coves along the shore.
The area dates to the Song Dynasty, when the Mituo Temple was established and still stands today with its yellow walls and red-tiled roof. Later, during wartime periods, military fortifications were built to protect the coast and remain as remnants of that defensive history.
The area holds spiritual significance through sites like the White Beach Temple, which honors Zhao Wuniang and draws visitors during her birthday celebration on the third day of August. Local fishing village stories and folk traditions remain woven into how people experience and use the coastal landscape today.
The area is easily accessible by direct bus from Xiangshan, taking about 15 minutes for an affordable ride. A scenic coastal road stretches for about 12 kilometers and connects various sections with numerous viewpoints. Visitors should bring supplies and water, as food options inside are limited to a small shop, though hotels are available near the entrance.
Red Rock stands out as a dramatic cliff formation with vivid red layered stones that contrast sharply against the ocean, offering a striking natural sight. When tides recede, some beaches become so hard and flat that visitors can walk barefoot across the sand without sinking, a rare beach experience.
