Schwedt/Oder, Border city in Uckermark District, Germany
Schwedt on the Oder is a town in Uckermark District, in northeastern Germany, sitting directly along the river that marks the border with Poland. The town spreads across both sides of the waterway, with residential neighborhoods, green spaces, and industrial facilities reaching toward the frontier.
Written records first mention the settlement in 1265, when Brandenburg acquired it from Pomeranian dukes along with a fortress structure. It later developed into a residence town with its own theater, offering performances from 1771 onward.
The name comes from Slavic roots referring to a shallow riverside location, still visible in how the town sits along the waterfront today. Local markets gather near the church on weekdays, while the theater continues to stage musical performances throughout the year.
The center is easy to explore on foot, with short distances between the town hall, church, and riverside walkway along the Oder. Spring and summer bring mild weather for walks in the nearby national park, while the theater offers more performances during autumn and winter.
The nearby Lower Oder Valley National Park is home to ospreys, beavers, and otters living in the wetlands along the river. Visitors can sometimes spot these animals from the riverbank, especially during early morning and evening hours.
