Zeitz, Medieval castle complex in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Zeitz sits at the confluence of the White Elster River and smaller tributaries in southern Saxony-Anhalt, near the borders of Thuringia and Saxony. The townscape spreads across gentle hills that rise about 525 feet (160 meters) above sea level.
The settlement became a bishop's seat in 968 and remained so for six decades until church administration moved to Naumburg in 1028. Afterwards, the place developed as a trading center along river routes.
