Schneeberg, Mining municipality in Erzgebirgskreis, Germany

Schneeberg is a mining municipality in the Erzgebirgskreis district of Saxony, situated at approximately 470 meters elevation in a mineral-rich landscape. It lies between the cities of Aue and Zwickau and still bears the marks of its mining heritage.

Silver deposits were discovered in the late 15th century, prompting the settlement's founding and development as a major mining center. This discovery shaped the region's growth and prosperity for centuries to come.

The St. Wolfgang Church displays works by Lucas Cranach the Elder that reflect the wealth brought by mining. Today, visitors can see how central this church was to the mining community's life and pride.

The municipality is served by Federal Routes 93 and 169, offering direct connections to Leipzig and other Saxon destinations. Visitors should use these main highways to access the town and explore the surrounding area.

An impressive engineering feat from the 16th century is the Schneeberg timber transport ditch, a water system that conveyed wood to local smelters. This sprawling network demonstrates the ingenuity of the era's mining engineers.
