Humboldt University of Berlin is a research university in Dorotheenstadt, central Berlin. The main building stands in the Prince Henry Palace, a baroque structure with neoclassical facades and colonnaded courtyards.
The university was founded in 1809 on the initiative of Wilhelm von Humboldt, who wanted to realize a new idea of higher education. Research and teaching were intentionally combined here for the first time, a model many universities worldwide later adopted.
The name honors Wilhelm von Humboldt, who brought together research and teaching. Today, lecture halls, seminar rooms and research centers enable students and scholars from around the world to work and discuss together.
Nine faculties offer degree programs in German and English, attended by around 32,000 students from many countries. Libraries and lecture halls are spread across several locations in Berlin, with the historic main building near the boulevard Unter den Linden.
The library system holds over 6.5 million volumes across numerous disciplines. This collection ranks among the largest academic libraries in Germany and reflects centuries of preserving knowledge.
